Was it only a few years ago that people claimed that digital music would never take off? The labels wanted restrictive DRM (digital rights management) and high prices, while the consumers wanted no DRM and low prices. Somehow Apple managed to bridge the two and guess what? Digital music sells. In fact Apple has sold a kajillion songs already. Well, actually, 3 billion songs, but after a billion, who’s counting?
Apple’s counting, and so is everyone else. iTunes has just become the third largest music retailer in the US, bypassing both Amazon and Target. The increasingly misnamed Apple iTunes Store now has:
- more than five million songs
- 550 TV shows
- 500 movies
