Apple says goodbye to Macworld

December 17th, 2008

For a while, the Mac-o-sphere was wondering why Apple’s formal announcement on Macworld was late this year. Now we know. It’s a double whammy.

First bad news : Steve Jobs won’t be doing the Keynote for Macworld 2009. This is the first time in a while. Normally, this would lead to intense speculation on Master Steve’s health.

So we get to have Phil Schiller managing the Keynote.

Second bad news : This is the last Macworld that Apple will participate in. Apple has slowly pulled out of most conferences and expos, starting famously with Macworld New York, then Apple Expo in Paris, then NAB. For Mac fans who have been religiously looking forward to announcements every January, this is certainly the end of an era.

The timing is certainly very odd; Apple is at a high now in terms of mindshare and market share. That said, Apple is a very different company from what it was just a few years ago. 25% of their business now comes from a whole new category : mobile phones. Perhaps we will see Apple at CES and CTIA instead?
