What to do with an old iBook?

Less than 3 weeks ago, I purchased a new (though refurbished) entry level MacBook as a replacement for my long serving iBook. As it turns out, the timing was just right as my iBook finally gave up yesterday.

Mac OS X 10.5.6 Released

If you have Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard installed in your Mac, then it’s time for an update. Apple has released Mac OS X 10.5.6, which brings “general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac”.

Office 2008 and Office 2004 for Mac updated

MICROSOFT GZA-00006 OFFICE MAC HOME STUDENT 2008 DVD

Microsoft is still one of the largest independent software vendors for the Apple Mac OS X operating system. I’ve used Office 2004 in my iBook and with the new MacBook, I’m trying out Office 2008. Performance wise, it’s so-so, but with the latest updates the applications seem much more responsive.

Old iBook, meet new MacBook

old iBook, new MacBook

I have been using my iBook G4 for well over 3 years now, and as you can see in the photo above, it’s been much abused (but also much loved). The iBook G4 is still performing ok, although it can’t keep up with the latest applications. The battery lasts for a mere 15 minutes, and the power adaptor has been replaced with a cheapo third party one (the original one caught fire, believe it or not). So, it’s time to replace the iBook.
