Use USB storage expansion with your Apple TV

July 30th, 2007

Apple MB189LL/A 160GB Apple TV

Apple TV is one of Apple’s more “quiet” products. In fact, Apple did not even report on the number of units sold in its last financial update. There have been a number of hacks for the Apple TV, but the latest one doesn’t involve opening it up and swapping a hard drive at all.

This new patch has been tested to work with Apple TV software version 1.0. It enables you to use any Journaled HFS+ formatted external USB drive with your Apple TV. No more headaches in choosing what goes into your limited hard disk space!

What you will need :

  • An ssh-enabled Apple TV.
  • An Intel-Mac or Intel-based Unix.
  • An installed version of Mac OS X 10.4 Intel.
  • An original, unmodified copy of the ‘mach_kernel.prelink’ file from the Apple TV.
