
Apple TV is one of Apple’s more “quiet” products. In fact, Apple did not even report on the number of units sold in its last financial update. There have been a number of hacks for the Apple TV, but the latest one doesn’t involve opening it up and swapping a hard drive at all.

Apple just released their past quarter financial results, and the numbers look really good. In the 3 months ending June 30th, Apple has managed to :
- ship 1,764,000 Macs (a new company record by more than 150,000 computers)
- sell 9,815,000 iPods (well over 100,000 per day)
- gain US$5.41 billion in revenue and net quarterly profit of US$818 million

It’s almost a month since the Apple iPhone was officially released. Bob Levitus (aka “Dr. Mac” of the Houston Chronicle) shares his thoughts on the device after weeks of usage.
“I’m closing in on 30 days as an iPhone user and am still impressed,” reveals Bob LeVitus (Houston Chronicle). Now his “one and only phone,” he uses “it all day for music, telephone, Internet access, contacts and appointments, and I have yet to run out of juice before 9 p.m.” Levitus enjoys the map application and thinks the “built-in Safari Web browser is terrific. When the TV commercials tell you iPhone offers the real Internet, they’re not kidding.” In fact, LeVitus confesses that “after living with this review unit for almost a month, I can’t imagine living without one.”

Apple’s partner for the Apple iPhone, AT&T, saw an immediate positive impact from the collaboration for last quarter. AT&T just released their previous quarter results: revenues up 86.7%, profits up 61%. Within just 1.25 days (since the iPhone went on sale on June 29th), AT&T gained 140,000 customers with the iPhone. Of course, not all of these are new customers, and the number is well below the analyst-inflated figures (there was one report saying that the number went to a whopping 700,000).

So AT&T customers are well-covered when it comes to the Apple iPhone. The rest of the world, not so much. The demand for iPhones is now so high that people are beginning to see them everywhere. Two places where the iPhone was spotted recently : Expansys UK and T-Mobile Germany.

Unlike with iPods, Apple has not (yet) introduced a laser etching service for the iPhone. The good news is, if you have some time and the right equipment in your hands, you can do it yourself. Apple’s latest operating system, Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, has been delayed since spring, and should come out in October. If you’re absolutely sure you want it, you can now pre-order Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard from Amazon.com.
The price remains the same as the last version of Mac OS X, US$129 (even for the “Ultimate Edition”).

It’s not even a week yet since the Apple iPhone was released, and already a lot of very clever people are hard at work cracking it. While we cannot blame AT&T for trying to maximise their exclusivity on the iPhone, there are many people using other GSM networks in the US and overseas who are impatient to get their hands on this hot item.
