Apple has released the new 17 inch MacBook Pro, powered by Intel Core Duo dual-core processors. The new MacBook Pro has a display which is 36% brighter than the previous Powerbook G4 series. Now the anticipation is even higher for the 12-inch Powerbook/iBook replacement.

One of the largest groups developing Mac software (outside of Apple) is Microsoft’s Mac Business Unit. They are mainly responsible for Microsoft Office, Messenger, and Virtual PC. Apple has released the latest update of its Java support for Mac OS X, Java 2Platform Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 4 (what a mouthful!). The updates are available for both PPC Macs (53MB) and new Intel Macs (80MB).

Aperture 1.1, the universal binary version of Aperture with additional technological advancements was released last week. The software will now be priced at $299 (a $200 price decrease from the original version). With this new price point, Aperture 1.1 can now be used by professional photographers, as well as “advanced amateurs,” or anyone shooting with a digital SLR camera that wants to do more to edit their shots.

… and it’s crazy fast! After a short beta test, Mozilla formally released Firefox 1.5.0.2 today, which includes a Universal Binary version for Intel-based Macs. First results from users indicate that Firefox is now much, much faster than any other browser – including Safari.

My daily workhorse, a G4 iBook, is just over one year old – and it’s still going on strong. It replaced another iBook which served me well for 3 years. So in my normal upgrade cycle, there’s still 18-24 months of life in my iBook yet. While the jury is still out whether the Intel-based iBook is going to be renamed as the MacBook (or remain as iBook), it looks like the new machine is coming soon. ThinkSecret reports that the iBook replacement with 13.3 inch widescreen display is coming in May. At this point, there are still more questions than answers.
