No Mac OS X for The $100 Laptop

November 15th, 2005

100 dollar laptop

The 100 dollar laptop is a project first mooted by MIT MediaLab’s Nicholas Negroponte, as a new tool for developing nations such as China and Brazil. The initial investors of the project are Google, AMD, Red Hat, News Corp. and Brightstar Corp. Apparently Steve Jobs offered Mac OS X for free, but it was declined because it’s “not open source”. While the actual reasons are not clear, it could be Red Hat put its foot down and said no. After all, Mac OS X is built on BSD, and Darwin has been open source for years.
